'Notícias do Brasil' Exhibition

Works from the Collection of Centro Cultural SESC Rio

The exhibition "Notícias do Brasil" was held at SESC Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro. It featured a selection from the institution's print collection, including works by Cicero Dias, Carybé, and Glauco Rodrigues. The exhibition design, originally created for the historic SESC palace, proposes an approach that unfolds in two main transitions: The first transition moves from the public space into the gallery. This is achieved through the use of ordinary materials, often found in precarious public constructions, such as canvases and metal profiles, and the creation of freestanding supports. These allow the structure to maintain physical and conceptual autonomy from the palace in which it is installed, while also suggesting that the structure is adaptable, moving freely between interior and exterior spaces. The second transition concerns the way the works are read. This deviates from conventional frontality by introducing oblique angles in the supporting structure, placing the observer in a more intimate position with the works. The transparency of the canvases further allows for a visual crossover between the displayed pieces, depending on the viewer’s perspective. The decision to create a freestanding structure also considered the construction waste after dismantling. Since it was the gallery's first exhibition, there was an opportunity to design structures that could be reused for other exhibitions or even as signage elements within the institution. After the exhibition, the institution saw the potential to turn the event into a traveling show, which extended its lifespan, as intended, and it has since toured four additional SESC units in Rio de Janeiro, continuing to be reused.

Exhibition design structures that, though seemingly ordinary, offer new perspectives on the displayed works.
